Sports Minister calls for elections to seven interim bodies
Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Jeevan Kumaranatunga has instructed
his Ministry officials to take steps to hold elections to elect office
bearers to seven interim bodies appointed by him before the end of
February.
The Minister gave separate opportunities for each of the Interim
Committees to have an interview with him as the first step.
Cricket, Kabbadi, Cycling, Karate, Wooshu, Wrestling and Water Sports
are the sports presently run by Interim Committees appointed by the
Minister.
The appointment of Interim Committees to these Sports Associations
became necessary because of various crisis that cropped up among the
office bearers of these Associations. Most of the crisis have now
receded in these Associations as a result. By conducting elections of
office bearers, the Minister expects the Associations to function
democratically.
The elections will be conducted under the supervision of the Director
General of Sports, stated a Ministry Media Release yesterday. |
