Several injured in Jaffna Army, student clash

Two senior academic staff and several students of the University of Jaffna were injured when students and Army personnel clashed at the University junction on the Palaly road yesterday.

According to military sources, the clash occurred when a procession arranged by the University students was stopped at the University junction on the Palaly road when some students participating in the procession pelted stones at the Army sentries near the junction.

Those participating in the procession were proceeding towards the Jaffna Government Secretariat and the SLMM office to hand over a memorandum on the death of a 20-year-old girl whose body was found floating in a well in Punkuduthivu in the Kayts district on Saturday.

The students were led by Jaffna University Vice Chancellor Professor S. Mohanadas along with the academic staff when the incident occurred at 10.30 a.m. yesterday, University sources said.

The injured have been admitted to the Jaffna General Hospital, sources said.

Several three-wheelers and bicycles were also damaged.
