Police arrest seven bookies
HYDERABAD, Wednesday (AFP) - Seven bookies were arrested for taking
bets on the outcome of the first international cricket match between
India and South Africa at the Rajiv Gandhi stadium, police said.
Police said nine mobile telephones, 11 radio wireless sets and a
computer were recovered from the suspects who were allegedly caught
accepting bets.
Betting on cricket matches is banned in India and police had been on
alert for South Africa's current five-match tour of the country. In
2000, Indian police had charged then touring South African captain
Hansie Cronje and four others with match-fixing. |
