Appeal for peaceful election
 

The UNP yesterday appealed to all voters to commit themselves to ensuring a free and fair poll today and also to ensure a peaceful atmosphere during the post election period.

"We appeal to all voters to cast their vote early and ensure that a peaceful atmosphere prevails, UNP Deputy Leader Karu Jayasuriya told a press briefing yesterday at the Opposition Leader's office.

He explained that the UNP was able to successfully complete the election campaign receiving the support of the masses. "During the election campaign, the UNP did not indulge in character assassination nor abuse state resources.We conducted the election campaign according to the laws laid down in the country."

He described today's election as a very decisive one in the history of Sri Lanka. "Today, the country needs a leader with a vision and commitment and also one who has international support which is very crucial at the moment. It is the UNP leader who possess these qualities."

Jayasuriya reiterated UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe's request to the public to extend their cooperation to the authorities to exercise a free and fair poll. "Our leader has appealed to party supporters to protect the supporters of opposition political parties. Everyone should commit themselves towards ensuring a peaceful atmosphere."
