Full membership to Afghanistan: Japan, China receive observer status

SAFTA set for January

THE 13th summit of the South Asian nations ended here in Dhaka, Bangladesh yesterday with the seven South Asian nations pledging to implement the South Asian Free Trade Agreement from January 1, 2006. The leaders also decided to admit neighbouring Afghanistan as a full member of the SAARC family and offer observer status to Asian economic giants China and Japan.

President calls for enhanced SAARC economic ties

PRESIDENT Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga in her address at the inaugural session of the 13th SAARC summit called for a strengthened economic cooperation in the SAARC region which is home to one fifth of the world population and reiterated the need to have common market in the SAARC region.

Sri Lanka beat Kazakhastan 24-12 in 'Return'

SRI LANKA not only bridged the deficit of six points over Kazakhastan, but went on to beat the quick tempered tourists in the 'Return' by 24 points to 12 after leading 18-5 at the breather in their Rugby World Cup (RWC) Asian Qualifier at Longden Place on Saturday. Kazakhastan won the first game 25-19 at Almaty.

A CD containing patriotic songs sung by veteran vocalists to the lyrics and tunes of well known song writers and lyricists was presented to Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse by a group of artistes at Temple Trees on Friday. The artistes described the CD as token of their trust in the Premier for his efforts to promote national feelings and patriotism. Among the artistes in the picture are Rohana Weerasinghe, Deepika Priyadharshani, Charitha Priyadharshani Peiris, Edward Jayakody, Renuka Balasuriya, Somaratne Dissanayake, Bandula Wijeweera and Winnie Hettigoda.
