Ranil plans to hold two referenda

While renewing his invitation to the SLFP for joint cooperation to deal with the national problem, UNP Presidential candidate Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday revealed he would hold two referenda aimed at resolving the country's prolonged crisis upon being elected President.

"One is to seek the people's mandate for a political solution jointly agreed upon and the next is to get through a Constitution prepared based on the political solution." Wickremesinghe told yesterday's press briefing at the Opposition leaders' office.

He assured that the proposed solution will be implemented only after its endorsement by the people.

He stressed it was necessary for the two main political parties to work together to solve the national problem. "When I become the President, I will talk to the leader of the SLFP and ask whether they are willing to work with me. People want peace. The two parties should work together, otherwise there will be no peace."

Responding to a question whether he would form a new Government or go for a another General Election after his victory, Wickremesinghe said the need of the hour is to work together.

"The two main political parties have to come together as the country is in a mess. We have to bring an end to poverty and ensure law and order and harmony. That's what the country wants. I don't seek political advantage." Wickremesinghe said he was even ready to invite them to join his Government. "I am happy to work with them and I invite them to be in my Government."

Replying to a query about the possible role of the JVP, Wickremesinghe said he would provide the opportunity for the JVP and LTTE to talk to each other.

"There are differences of opinion between the JVP and us. When the peace process commences and it goes on, I will talk to the LTTE and ensure that JVP also come to the table and talk to each other to arrive at a decision," he added.
