SLFP organisers pledge total commitment to PM

SLFP organisers at electorate and district levels have pledged their total commitment to ensure the victory of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse with the joint support of all progressive forces at the Presidential Election.

The pledge was given at a meeting of SLFP electoral and district organisers presided over by the Party's Senior Vice President D.M. Jayaratne at Temple Trees on Wednesday. Three main resolutions were unanimously adopted to ensure the election campaign's success.

Among those attending the meeting were senior party members Lakshman Jayakody, Alavi Mowlana, Nimal Siripala de Silva, Kingsley Wickremaratne, Anuruddha Ratwatte, Maithripala Sirisena, A.D. Susil Premajayanth, Mangala Samaraweera, A.H.M. Fowzie, S.B. Navinna, Jeyaraj Fernandopulle, C.B. Ratnayake, Piyasena Gamage and Tissa Karaliyedda.

The participants were briefed by Sirisena (on directing the political campaign), Premajayanth (on the Alliance and its tasks), Ratwatte (on campaign monitoring), Samaraweera (on the main campaign operations and the tasks of the organisers) and Seneviratne (on taking legal action against biased election campaign coverage by certain mass media organisers).

The Prime Minister said he had loved the SLFP since his birth and stressed he would never work to destroy the party or betray it. He told the organisers that he needed their full backing now as then. Rajapakse urged all organisers to do their utmost to ensure a democratic victory at the election.

The main resolutions adopted were total commitment to ensure the victory of SLFP Presidential nominee Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse; forming an alliance with the JVP and all other anti-UNP progressive forces to completely defeat Ranil Wickremesinghe and carry forward the development process that the Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga Government initiated in 1994 after ending the UNP Government's 17-year repressive rule.

The party organisers expressed full confidence in the ability of the future Mahinda Rajapakse Government in continuing the development work carried out by the Kumaratunga Government for 12-years amidst great challenges; and condemned statements that jeopardised anti-UNP campaign while firmly resolving not to issue to the media any statement that would be advantageous to reactionary forces.
