FOREMOST among the Buddhists to be modernised was
Anagarika Dharmapala. In 1891, Dharmapala set up the Mahabodhi
Society, the first laymen led Theravada organisation, and strove to
resuscitate Buddhism in India. M.B.S. is the first inter - or
transnational Buddhist organisation. Dharmapala untiringly toured
the globe. Visiting England four times, US six times, China Japan
and Thailand as well as France, Italy, Germany and Canada.
