Lanka 'A' dismissed for 206, Upul Tharanga hits 72

DAMBULLA. Left hander Upul Tharanga hit an elegant 72 but could not prevent Sri Lanka 'A' from being dismissed for 206 runs in their first innings on the opening day of their three day fixture against the touring South Africa 'A' team played at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium yesterday.

Tharanga played the sheet anchor role and held the middle order together with a determined batting performance after they had been put into bat. The match of course got underway only at 12 noon following overnight rain and the game was reduced to a three day contest instead of the originally scheduled second four day unofficial test.

The Lankans after a promising start were soon in trouble after lunch as they lost wickets at regular intervals during the second session. In fact they collapsed to 153 for 6 at tea and were in danger of being bowled out for less than two hundred runs.

However all rounder Dilhara Lokuhettige came into their rescue with an entertaining knock of 39 from just 35 balls inclusive of seven fours. Upul Thranga's solid knock finally came to an end when he was bowled by De Bruyn for a well compiled 72 which included eleven hits to the ropes.

He displayed a great amount of concentration while occupying the crease for little over three hours and faced 108 deliveries and was seventh out with the total on 171. He also put on 34 useful runs for the seventh wicket with Dilhara Lokuhettige.

In fact de Bruyn with three important wickets was the unlikely hero for South Africa who had rallied around through the more experienced Paul Adams and John Botha during the first unofficial test in Colombo. The other two bowlers to impress for South Africa was Monde Zondeki and Henderson who also picked up three wickets each.

South Africa 'A in reply were well placed at 71 for 1 with skipper Jacque Rudolph unbeaten on 42 having struck six fours. He also put on 46 for the first wicket with Andrew Puttick who was bowled by Dilhara Lokuhettige.
