Police posts attacked in East
by Rashomi Silva
Two Police posts in the volatile East came under grenade attack on
Sunday night seriously injuring a Police constable and wounding two
civilians, the Army spokesperson's office announced.
The trio were wounded when an unidentified man lobbed a hand grenade
at the Police sentry point near Uppuveli, Trincomalee on the Colombo-
Trincomalee highway on Sunday night.
The Constable was identified as PC W.R. Gooneratne (39206) and
civilian Kodippili Upali, a bus driver.
The roundabout where the sentry point was located provides a gateway
to the Trinco town and to other towns in the Northern part of the
district.
The victims were rushed to Trincomalee hospital for treatment while
troops with the Police assistance cordoned off the area and mounted
search operations in search of the assailants. The Army said they
suspect the LTTE for carrying out the attack.
The second Police post located at Palameenmadu in Batticaloa came
under attack shortly after midnight.
The Army said the attack was carried out by a few Tigers after they
infiltrated the area. The Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission was informed of
the incidents. |
