Seminars for provincial journalists

Sri Lanka Press Institute (SLPI) has made arrangements to conduct district level seminars to educate Provincial Journalists under its project `Capacity development and networking of journalists' in disaster sensitive reporting and downstream accountability.

Under this project, the SLPI has appointed Provincial Journalists as Regional Coordinators representing eight Tsunami affected districts of Galle, Matara, Kalutara, Hambantota, Ampara, Batticaloa, Trincomalee and Jaffna districts.

Addressing the regional coordinators meeting held at the SLPI on Friday, SLPI Course Coordinator Ranga Kalansooriya said the SLPI has made arrangements to conduct eight residential workshops in these Tsunami devastated districts to educate provincial correspondents on this project.

In each district, the SLPI will select 25 provincial journalists to attend the workshops.

Kalansooriya said SLPI has played a leading role to promote country's media sphere during the past one and half years.

Press Complaints Commission CEO Ms.Manique Mendis said the commission will also assist the SLPI to implement this project. Provincial journalists were given good training on disaster management at the recent workshop held at Galadari hotel on July 11.

Director College of Journalism Dr.Uvais Ahamed said after completion of these workshops for the provincial journalists in eight Tsunami affected districts, a national level evaluation will be done by the resources team.
