Army storm into semis by beating Havelocks 18-15 in extra time

FULL BACK T.A. Silva fired across a 35 metre penalty in extra time to power Army to the semi-finals of the Clifford Cup Knock-out Rugby Tournament after the scores stood at 15-all at full time in the first quarter-final match played at Longden Place yesterday. Army led 15-10 at the breather.

Second rower Nishantha Jayasuriya and winger Lankatilleke scored the tries for the Army of which one was converted by T.A. Silva who also put over another penalty in addition to the match winning penalty.

For Havelocks Lalindra Rodrigo, Wasim Thajudeen and Zahir Badurdeen scored a try each with Thajudeen missing all three conversions.

The scores read 15-all at the final whistle and the game went into extra time. In the 10th minute of extra time Army were awarded a 35 metre penalty by referee Anil Jayasinghe and Army's full back T.A. Silva who took the kick sent the ball sailing over the cross bar to pilot the Soldiers to a 18-15 win.

They will now meet Kandy SC in the first semi-final on August 30 at Nittawela.
