Rs. 12.7m to implement special handicrafts project

Minister of Small Industries of the Central Provincial Council P. Radhakrishnan has allocated funds amounting to Rs. 12.7 million to implement a special project to protect and uplift the traditional handicrafts in the Central Province.

This project will be implemented in 12 villages in which traditional craftsman families live in the Kandy, Malate and Nuwara Eliya districts. One of the main objectives of the project was to help encourage those small scale industrialists in order to save them from being ruined, and craftsman families to earn an income.

The Ministry is hoping to get the human participation, particularly the contribution by school leavers,in the implementation of this project, which will be put into practice. Under the supervision of the Provincial Department of Small Industries, said Minister Radhakrishnan.

He added that steps would be taken to buy those handicrafts produced under the projects by the Department of Small Industries and to market them among local and foreign buyers.
