Windies win practice game at Kandy

A good knock of 52 not out with 6 fours and 1 six off 61 deliveries helped West Indies to score a thrilling two wicket win over the Central Province Invitation XI in a limited over cricket match played at the Asgiriya stadium in Kandy yesterday.

Following heavy overnight rain, the match got underway only at 1.15 p.m. and was reduced to 30 overs per side.

Central Province batting first were helped through the fine fourth wicket stand of 82, between Chanaka Wijesinghe and Arosha Perera. But later batsmen failed to consolidate.

When the Indies batted they were off to a shock start with the scoreboard reading 3 for 8 at one stage. It was the batting of Sylvester Joseph which stemmed the collapse after skipper S. Chandrapaul was caught at the wicket by Dammika Ranaweera for a duck.

Later Dwayne Smith and Joseph put on 51 for the 6th wicket which took them closer to victory. Again another collapse as the score slid from 120 for 5 to 127 for 8. But the last man Tino Best made victory certain by hitting Chanaka Wijesinghe to long-on boundary.
