British police clear Birmingham area in new alert


Police evacuated thousands of people and sealed off the centre of England's second city Birmingham on Saturday night in the biggest security alert since four bombs exploded in London killing more than 50 people. Acting in response to what they said was intelligence of a threat, police cleared the city's entertainment and Chinatown districts of some 30,000 people and carried out a controlled explosion on a bus.

N.Korea agrees to return to nuclear talks in July


North Korea has agreed to return to stalled six-country talks on its nuclear weapons programmes this month after a break of more than a year, Pyongyang's official news agency and a U.S. official said. The official said Pyongyang had promised it would attend with the goal of making progress at the talks -- which involve the two Koreas, China, Japan, Russia and the United States.
