40 housing units for tsunami victims in Colombo North
MODERA and Mattakkuliya are two townships in the North of Colombo
City, which were badly affected by the tsunami.
The Lions of Modera-Mattakkuliya, with the "We Serve" motto in mind
rushed to the assistance of the displaced victims mobilising its members
to alleviate the sufferings caused by this disaster.
They have now embarked on a long-term rehabilitation reconstruction
project with the assistance of Lions Clubs International Foundation and
other donors to build 40.
Two story housing units, with a floor area of 570 square feet,
comprising two bed rooms, living room, kitchen and toilet. The
approximate cost of the construction of one housing unit is estimated at
Rs. 608,000
After much deliberations Lions Club of Modera-Mattakkuliya received
from the Government of Sri Lanka, 130 perches of prime land situated at
the entrance to the City of Colombo, bordering the Main Highway,
adjacent to Japan-Sri Lanka Friendship Bridge and they have signed a
memorandum of understanding with the Ministry of Urban Development.
Colombo Mayor has come to their assistance to provide the necessary
infrastructure, filling of the land, fencing, storm water drains,
electricity, roads etc. The Municipal machinery is right now rolling on.
The ground preparation work will be completed to lay the foundation in
mid June.
A medical dispensary, children's park, a daycare and community centre
are to be added at a later date. They appeal for donations from
well-wishers and organisations in this regard.
The Lions of Modera-Mattakkuliya will directly supervise the
construction of this village and all monies collected will be audited as
per Lions International Regulations and also this Lions Tsunami Village
will be adopted by the club after the completion of this project for
future humanitarian work. |
