Hartal in North and East

The entire North and East came to a virtual standstill yesterday due to the Hartal called by the LTTE in protest of the killing of a LTTE supporter in the commotion at Santhiveli in Batticaloa on Monday, Police and Military sources said yesterday.

According to Military Spokesman Brigadier Daya Ratnayake these areas remained relatively peaceful, despite some incidents at Trincomalee, Chavakachcheri and Achchuveli.

According to Brigadier Ratnayake, the Police tear gassed the mob who tried to attack Army bunkers in Chavakachcheri and Achchuveli in Jaffna.

The LTTE incited mob had hurled a petrol bomb at a bunker at Chavakachcheri and another hand bomb was hurled at a bunker at Achchuveli.
