7th SAARC golf championships:

Gagan and Thushani set the pace on opening day
 

Gagan Verma of India with 74 gross in the men's and Thushani Selvaratnam of Sri Lanka with 73 gross in the Ladies Championship lead on the first day the 7th SAARC Golf Championships at Rajawella yesterday.

It is organised by the Sri Lanka Golf Union and the Victoria Golf and Country Resort.

Six countries from the SAARC Region namely defending champions Pakistan, India (runner up), Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan teed off at the beautiful Victoria Golf Course.

Verma of India playing to a handicap of 3 came up with the best gross score of 74 with one over, team mates Ajeetesh Sandhu Hemns Rai (76) and Jasjeet Singh too came up with top performance to put India on top.

Sri Lanka men's team led by K. Prabagaran who got a 80 gross too appear to be in the fight with J. J. Kumar getting 77 gross and Mithuni Perera 79.

India is leading the men's championship with 228 and Sri Lanka is not far behind with 236 and Pakistan is having a total of 244 and Bangladesh 235.

Sri Lanka's Thushani Selvaratnam who came over from Arizona lead the ladies championship with a gross score of 73 with an even Par Jackie Dias got 88 gross to make a total of 161 to lead the championship race for ladies.

India who are behind by 10 points have got 171 with Shalini Malini 87 gross and Neho Majhitia contributing 84.

Scores of the matches played yesterday are:

Men's championships

India: Gagan Verma 74, Hemms Rai 76, Jasjeet Singh 78.

Sri Lanka: K. Prabagaran 80, J. J. Kumar 77, Mithuni Perera 79.

Pakistan: Vagas Ahamed 78, Thariq Mohommed 81, M. Wasim Rana 85.

Bangladesh: Md Siddikara Rahman 77, Md Shathawar Sohel 81 and Md. Mohammed Sajam 77.

Nepal: Tashi Ghda 90, Teshi Tsering 90, Chuda Bahadari 77.

Bhutan: Ching Tshering 83, Tawa Panjore 91, Karmarang Ghoel 86.

Ladies Championship

Sri Lanka: Thushani Selvaratnam 73, Jackie Dias 88.

India: Shalini Malini 87, Neho Majhitia 84.

Nepal: Swasthika Shrastha 108, Kesang Chhodenlama 106.
