Ceylon Teachers Travel Club is 50 years old
The Ceylon Teachers Travel Club will be celebrating its 50th
anniversary in May this year. In 1955 a St. Thomas' Primary School
teacher CJP Thamoderam suggested that the teachers should start a travel
club. And they did in May that year when 25 teachers met to form the
Club. Mr. Thamoderam was the first President. The numbers have now grown
to be 350 and they have become much travelled within Sri Lanka and seen
many places which many people have not seen.
With the years the Club became very active and chose its travel
destinations with not merely enthusiasm but also with discerning choice
and intelligence. This has enabled many teachers, particularly women to
see less known places of historical and archaeological significance and
sites of cultural and scenic beauty.
Soon they will be visiting a cave in Digavapi where it is believed
that the Buddha stopped on his way back from Adams peak. These journeys
are very educative and informative because, being teachers no doubt, a
considerable amount of research is done on the venues giving its
description, location, history and significance.
The club also has two charity programs during Poson and Christmas
when it helps poor schools with their requirements. Every month there is
one trip or some other event. |
