Karuna attack:

Tigers seek STF protection

THE leader of the Kanchikudichchuaru LTTE base in Ampara sought the protection of the Special Task Force as his base has been reportedly overrun by Karuna faction cadres in the early hours of yesterday, STF Chief DIG Nimal Leuke told the Daily News.

According to DIG Leuke, 'Jenathan' the leader of the LTTE Kanchikudichchuaru base moved out from his camp amidst the Karuna faction attack to Sagama STF controlled areas along with the 12 other LTTE cadres seeking STF protection.

Jenathan has sent two LTTE cadres to the Sagama STF camp seeking their protection from Karuna faction cadres, he added. According to military sources four LTTE cadres have died in the attack. "There could have been a big incident for LTTE cadres to move out from the camp," he said.

He said STF personnel were sent to the area to strengthen bolster security. Civilians around Kanchikudichchuaru has moved to Sagama STF camp and Thirukkovil area seeking protection from the STF, he added.

According to sources, Karuna faction cadres have begun their onslaught after arriving there from Karadiyanaru on the Ampara- Batticaloa border and gone towards Bakmitiyawa and Namal Oya.
