Mystery illness under control

HEALTH authorities yesterday assured that the mysterious health condition reported from the Peradeniya Teaching Hospital is now under control. No new patients or deaths have been reported over the last few days.

"No new patients have been reported over the last few days and the situation is now under control," a senior Healthcare and Nutrition Ministry spokesman told the Daily News last evening.

Blood and tissue samples of the three deceased and the infected patients have been sent to a laboratory in the USA. "Those samples will be further tested at the US AIDS laboratory apart from the current medical investigations in Sri Lanka," he added.

Director General of Health Services Dr. Athula Kahandaliyange visited the hospital on Wednesday to obtain first hand information about the health condition of the Peradeniya Hospital, suspected cases and treatment provided to them.
