The Small and Rural Industries Ministry has set up a textile products
manufacturing village at Kahahena, Hanwella as part of the Guru Pehayen
Ran Pehayata a program to develop 1000 industrial villages in the
country. The total investment of the project is Rs. 2.5 million.
Deputy Minister Sunil Hadunnetti said that the textile is the more
demandable industry in the country and it is a more income generating
avenue as well. "Although we have a proud history for our traditional
textile industry, society has ignored it in the past few years. "But the
demand for local textile products has not diminished in the
international market. We should persuade our people, the importance of
the industry by creating local products that are in accordance with our
culture," the Deputy Minister said.
He said that the textile industry in India contributed largely to
drive its national economy, and called all to get-together to rebuild
the local textile industry through dedication and support.
"These manufacturers have faced various problems in the past and the
Ministry has decided to look into them and develop their potential. In
order to provide a stable market to this textile village at Kahahena,
the Health and Nutrition Ministry has agreed with the Ministry of Small
and Rural Industries to grant 35,000 meters from its annual quota to
manufacture surgical gauze in this village. |
