Dissolve Kandy MC, opposition urges

The Opposition of the Kandy Municipal Council have requested the Central Provincial Governor and the Chief Minister that the UNP ruled Kandy Municipal Council be dissolved on the grounds of corruption, unauthorised constructions and bad administration.

Kandy declared world heritage city by UNESCO has become the most dirtiest city, they claim. Council's Opposition Leader, Sena Dissanayake said at the monthly meeting of the council scheduled to be held yesterday.

The Kandy Town Development Plan was presented with the approval of the Government and the Provincial Council. Council had taken decisions at its general meetings to clean the city, provide security and facilities to people who use pavements to walk about to remove all unauthorised structures and to find alternative places for pavement hawkers.

Notwithstanding 14 unauthorised shops have been put up near the clock tower junction on the instigation of some UNP members. It also has been revealed that those shops had been fabricated elsewhere and brought to the clock tower junction by council lorries, added Member Sena Dissanayake.

Four members of the UNP have made use of Getambe Municipal Grounds for various purposes and defaulted payment to the council Rs. 460,000.

Today the members of the council have become debtors to the council itself. Under these circumstances they have demanded for the dissolution of the council, said Opposition Leader, Sena Dissanayake.
