JVP will not leave Government - Somawansa Amarasinghe

The Leader of the People's Liberation Front (JVP) Somawansa Amarasinghe yesterday said at the party's Colombo District Committee General Meeting that the JVP would not break away from the Alliance Government and even if it did break away, that does not mean that the UNP will come into power.

The meeting was held at the Colombo Municipal Grounds.

Amarasinghe said that the Alliance Government was already doing a great deal of work to rebuild the country while minimising the damage caused by the UNP in their dealings with the LTTE under the pretext of establishing peace in the country.

He said the tsunami had upset the UNP plans and its leadership even as the people showed an unprecedented unity amongst themselves after the disaster without signs of a potential manifestation of any communal differences.

This stood out as a major threat against the UNP bid to come to power by putting the country's sovereignty and autonomy at risk in their dealings with the LTTE at the behest of international powers.

He admitted that there was a conflict of opinions between the JVP and the SLFP about some matters concerning the national question. "But we will not leave the government unless there is an irreparable breach of the Alliance Agreement," he said.

JVP MP Wimal Weerawansa also spoke.
