Some thoughts on an Interim Council for the North-East
The
idea of an Interim Council for the North and East is not new; it has
been in political discourse since 1987 when suggestions were made to set
up an interim administration for the Northern and Eastern Provinces.
Under the Indo-Lanka Accord, the Government of Sri Lanka agreed to amend
the Sri Lankan constitution to create a Provincial Council system. The
principal stakeholders were of the view that an interim administration
to be set up until elections for the Provincial Council, under the 13th
amendment to the constitution, are held. Thus it was proposed only for a
very short period.
