Hope for Children begins income generating schemes
Moratuwa special correspondent
Hope for Children, the British Charity which has pledged rs. 19.5
million for a Foster Parent Scheme to be managed by the Dept. of
Probation and Child Care Services for Children who have lost both
parents as a result of the tsunami has now commenced income generation
schemes for unsupported, one parent families. The first of the schemes
will soon be operative in Weligama through Saviya Development Foundation
based at Galle one of the partner agencies of the charity.
Additionally the Charity has decided to concentrate it's resources on
the welfare of children under five. A spokesman for the Charity told the
Daily News that already the Charity has supported two of their partner
agencies Foundation for Rural Economic Development (FORED) and Eastern
Rehabilitation and Relief Organisation (ERRO-LANKA) in the construction
of semi-permanent structures near nine relief camps in Kalmunai and two
relief camps in Nintavur.
Two of these pre-schools in Kalmunai were opened by the Director of
the Charity, Dr. Robert Parsons during his recent visit to the island.
When the families are relocated into permanent housing the structures
would be dismantled and resited in the vicinity of the housing schemes.
The structures have been designed to facilitate this process. The
building will serve as a pre-school in the morning and as a community
centre in the evening. |
