On 26 December 2004, the ‘Diya-Kowulla’ was lifted by waves of the tsunami on to a jetty of Sri Lanka’s Galle Harbour. The ‘Diya-Kowulla’, a 300 cubic metre grab hopper dredger, was built by IHC Holland for the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) in 2003. The dredger was lifted back into the water by means of a jumbo crane ship. Special hoisting eyes were temporarily welded on the dredger, to enable the jumbo crane to lift her back into the water. The whole operation was financed by the Dutch government. SLPA Chairman Dileepa Wijesundare and the Netherland Ambassador Ms Susan Blankhart are also in the picture.
