American Corner in Kandy will strengthen US-Lanka ties
BY L. B. Wijayasiri in Kandy
THE United States Ambassador in Sri Lanka Jeffrey Lunstead said at
the opening of the "American Corner" in Kandy yesterday that the new
centre would not be an American Propaganda Unit but it would provide
information with regard to all aspects of American life to the Sri
Lankan people.
The United States Information Centre named as "American Corner" was
established at the precincts of the D. S. Senanayake Public Library in
Kandy.
Central Province Governor, Monty Gopallawa, Mayor of Kandy, Kesara
Senanayake, American Ambassador in Sri Lanka, Jeffrey Lunstead,
Chairman, Central Provincial Council, D. Madiyugaraja and film idol,
Sanath Gunatillake participated at the opening ceremony.
Ambassador Lunstead added that information was a very important
subject in the present day world. The information centre opened in Kandy
would not be an American propaganda centre but it would help educate Sri
Lankan people about the life of American people, their culture, art,
economics and all other aspects.
That would help strengthen the relations between Sri Lanka and the
United States.
Mayor of Kandy, Kesara Senanayake said that there was a United States
Information Centre in Kandy a few decades ago but unfortunately it was
closed down due to various reasons. But he was happy to see that a new
centre was established again.
He was happy to have had that centre opened at Municipal Public
Library. It was very recently that two former Presidents visited Sri
Lanka to see for themselves the tsunami disaster.
He hoped that the new American Centre would help strengthen better
relations between United States and Sri Lanka. |
