Coastal area road underwater

THE coastal area close to the newly built bridge in Peraliya and Akurala went underwater yesterday morning submerging the Galle road.

Sea water submerged the coast about a distance of 100 metres from the shore. Backhoe machines were used to clear the sea sand and debris that swept ashore following waves.

Police diverted all vehicles plying along the Galle road to turn from the Kahawa Junction.

Meanwhile, the Geological Survey and Mines Bureau reiterated that the rough condition in the southern sea belt yesterday afternoon was not a tsunami.

The surrounding area of Hikkaduwa and Seenigama, Malwanna road was one and half feet under sea water yesterday afternoon. No damage had been caused by the minor sea invasion.

The Geological Survey and Mines Bureau also stated that no earthquake was reported in any coastal area. There was no indication whatsoever regarding a tsunami or an earthquake.
