Switzerland to reconstruct tsunami-hit schools

A MEMORANDUM of Understanding has been signed between the Government of Sri Lanka and the Switzerland for rehabilitation and reconstruction of school damaged by tsunami disaster.

Under this Memorandum of Understanding, the Government of Switzerland will provide financial assistance to rehabilitate seven schools in Matara district and one school in Jaffna district. The seven schools will serve 5,200 students.

Switzerland has pledged Rs.700 million for emergency aid and rehabilitation in Sri Lanka. The Swiss Government's contribution will be channelled through the Swiss Agency for Development Cooperation.

It will work together with local authorities and community organisations and decide resources needed for the schools, such as playgrounds, teaching equipment and training facilities.
