by Asanga Warnakulasuriya
Two persons were shot dead and another critically
wounded in three separate incidents in Batticaloa, Eravur and
Valachchenai in shootings allegedly carried out by LTTE cadres
yesterday, the Army said.
The latest killings brings the death toll to 10
beginning Saturday in what the military believes is an escalation in
factional blood lettings between the LTTE cadres and Karuna loyalists.
The 37 year-old A. Kirubeswaran, a former PLOTE member
was waiting for a vehicle opposite Batticaloa Police to take him to the
Colombo Airport, when he was shot at around 5.10 am yesterday.
The victim in the Eravur shooting has been identified as
Velauthan Ilankeshwarn, a 27-year-old resident in Thalavaai believed to
be a former member of the Razeek group. Three gunmen had shot him dead
around 8.00 pm on Monday, the Army spokesperson said.
Another civilian, Sivaraj, a resident of Welikanda was
assaulted and later abducted by the LTTE to an uncleared area. The
