Belgian delegation happy with conditions at National hospital
by Udula Peiris
A Belgian delegation led by Health Minister Christiane
Vienne, of Belgium was in Sri Lanaka to observe the health services
activities in the island following the tsunami disaster.
The delegates who surveyed the conditions in the
National Hospital, Colombo, on Sunday visited all the sections of the
hospital including the Accident Service and expressed satisfaction of
the conditions prevailing in all divisions.
They inquired from Dr. Hector Weerasinghe, the Director
of the hospital as to how the hospital is kept so methodically clean
while a large number of patients are under treatment as indoor patients
regularly.
Dr. Weerasinghe while explaining the conditions in
detail informed the delegates that it was the dedication of the hospital
staff that kept the hospital neat and that though the hospital treats
over 3,500 indoor patients a day, it has only 3,000 beds.
The Governments of Finland and Saudi Arabia have gifted
a number of buildings with modern hospital equipment to facilitate
services.
Scarcity of medical equipment is one of the major
problems the hospital is confronting today, said Dr. Weerasinghe.
The Belgium delegation also expected to visit hospitals
in the districts of Galle, Matara, and Hambantota, during the next few
days.
Health Ministry Director Dr. Amal Harsha de Silva
accompanied the Belgium delegation that included a large number of
Directors of Health Services in Belgium. |
