Sri Lanka rupee up
The Sri Lanka rupee closed firmer on Monday, breaking a
four-day losing streak, as exporters cashed in dollar trade earnings and
banks unwound positions in the US currency, dealers said.
The rupee closed at 99.64 against the greenback,
compared with Friday's close at 99.70.
"Today there was less import demand (for dollars) and
there were conversions (of dollar earnings by exporters)," said one
local dealer at an international brokerage, adding that some banks were
also unwinding large dollar positions.
The rupee has gained about 5.0 per cent so far this year
thanks to expectations that hundreds of millions of dollars worth of
pledged tsunami aid will flow into state coffers.
Call money rates were at 8.125 per cent compared with
8.1 per cent on Friday. - Reuters |
