Cane craft village in Manampitiya

The Small and Rural Development Ministry has set up a cane crafts manufacturing village at Manampitiya, Polonnaruwa as a part of the Guru Pehayen Ran Pehayata national program to develop 1000 villages. The total investment for the project is Rs. 2.7 million.

Polonnaruwa District MP S. K. Subasinghe said that the Manampitiya is the best site for the cane crafts manufacturing industry and around 267 families have been engaged in it from the past. "But these manufacturers have faced various problems such as selling their products at a low prices in the market, facing raw materials shortage caused by illegal felling of forests and less support of the related government institutions during the past few years.

They also suffer from the lack of new technology and equipment. This has resulted in their income being reduced continuously," Subasinghe said.

"Therefore, the Ministry has decided to look in to them by developing their potential. We expect to help them build positive attitudes to return back to their business soon. The Ministry will also organise training programmes and seminars to introduce modern technology to villagers," he said.
