Queen Elizabeth 2 arrives in Sri Lanka

The world's most famous luxury cruise ship, the Queen Elizabeth 2 operated by Cunard Lines will arrive in Sri Lanka on March 19. Represented locally by Delmege Forsyth & Co. (Shipping) Ltd. who are the exclusive handling agents for Cunard Lines, the QE 2 as she is popularly known will call over in Colombo which is one of her 2005 world cruise stop overs for a period of 24 hours.

Director Delmege Shipping Captain L.N. Jayasooriya said the Company was proud to represent the Cunard Lines and had been doing so now for several decades.

"The QE 2 is scheduled to arrive with over 1600 passengers and her visit reflects the committment of Cunard Lines to Sri Lanka despite the recent tsunami".

Carrying some of the world's most affluent and privileged as its passengers, the 70,000 tonne QE 2 was built at a cost of 29 million pounds sterling in the 1960's and since then Cunard Lines has spent more than 15 times that sum on refurbishing, re-engining and re fitting.

The world's fastest passenger vessel, by the year 2002, the QE 2 completed more than five million nautical miles - a world record for any ship, as well as being the equivalent of sailing to the moon and back nine times, sailing around the world 230 times or making 1570 consecutive transatlantic crossings.

The Delmege Group's involvement in shipping goes back more than 100 years and beside the Cunard and Seabourn Lines, the Group represents Regional Container Lines (RCL) which is the largest feeder operator in the South East Asian region, Lafarge, Shell and Inchcape Shipping.

Delmege's shipping sector companies also act as agents for tankers, breakbulk vessels, specialized bulk cement carriers, passenger vessels and naval craft, provide offshore services to shipping principals and offer specialised handling for project cargoes.

Captain Jayasooriya said that the Delmege Group looked forward to the time when the Queen Mary 2, which is the world's largest, longest, tallest and widest liner in the world, will be able to visit Colombo.
