Tsunami sobers down 126th Blues Battle
BY RICHARD Dwight
THE 126th Royal-Thomian cricket encounter, that takes place this year in
the aftermath of the destruction caused by the recent tsunami, will be
held on a low key, sans the customary air of festive gaiety on March 10,
11 and 12 at the SSC grounds.
This was disclosed to the media at a briefing held at
the Jaic Hilton on Wednesday by the Chairman of the Jt. Organising
Committee V. S. de Soysa.
Being conscious and sensitive to the suffering brought
about to the many by this natural disaster - found those present at the
briefing widely accepting and backing the decision to hold the match
without the usual celebrations and glamour.
Warden of S. Thomas' College, David Ponniah in his
address said that the Battle of the Blues is not just another match for
it has through the years developed into something very much bigger,
evoking celebrations all round.
But he was quick to add, that this year celebrations, in
the context of the times we are in, will be furtherest from our minds.
He made it known, that during war and civil strife this match was
played, and so it must go on even if it means just playing cricket.
Principal of Royal College, Upali Gunesekera, was
mindful that being a State school they were bound by directives and
instructions to curb celebrations at this time, and was appreciative of
S. Thomas' and yet others, falling in line to hold the same view.
Notwithstanding the match being played on a low key,
Dialog GSM nonetheless will as in past, exclusively sponsor the match
for the fifth consecutive year, said the CEO, Dialog GSM, Dr. Hans
Wijesuriya, who was present to hand over the sponsorship package.
Wijesuriya assured both colleges that come what may,
that Dialog will stand by them and fall in line with the decision taken,
which he felt was right. He added there are many aspects to the Royal-Thomian
match, other than the fun element and, that the status of the match did
not simply matter to them, when it came to sponsorship. |
