Six civilians shot dead

SIX civilians were shot dead on Saturday night in Welikanda in what the military suspects to be yet another incident in the continuing spate of tit for tat attacks between the LTTE and paramilitary groups in the North East.

Among the dead is a member of the Karuna faction while the rest are civilians - four Muslims, one Sinhala national and one Tamil national.

Army spokesman Brigadier Daya Ratnayake told the Daily News yesterday that their investigations had revealed that the shooting took place at around 8.45pm on Saturday inside two houses in Kolakanawadiya in Welikanda.

"From what we have gathered from our preliminary investigations, we suspect the LTTE to be behind the killings," the Army spokesman added. Witnesses had told Police that several armed men had stormed the two houses and blazed away with their guns, Welikanda Police said.

According to the Army three others including a three-year-old girl were critically injured and removed to the Polonnaruwa hospital.

Police say they identified a former LTTEer turned Karuna loyalist Arjun Selvaraja among the dead.

The other injured victims were identified as Ashok Wijeyratne, Abdul Jabbar, Mohammed Hasan, M. Jeyama. The Army together with the Police have tightened security in the area and the SLMM was informed about the incident, Police said.
