'Talathara Jagath' shot dead


NOTORIOUS underworld gangster known as "Talathara Jagath", one of the main suspects in Southern Provincial Councillor M.K. Ranjith's murder was shot dead when the suspect tried to open fire at Police. The incident took place at around 6.00 am in Tangalle yesterday.

Southern Range DIG D. W. Prathapasingha told the Daily News yesterday that the suspect who was serving prison terms for 15 murders and several robberies at Matara prison escaped when tsunami hit the prison last December.

The 35 year-old army deserter was later taken into custody in Chilaw.

On directions of the DIG, Tangalle Police is conducting further investigations.


Mini cyclone in Puttalam


A mini cyclone lashed Karuwelagaswewa in Puttalam on Saturday causing damage to house and property.

Gale force winds blew off roofs of several houses and also wrecked fishing boats canoes docked along the coastal line.

Residents say this was the first time they experienced such strong winds during this time of the year.
