Distinguished chartered chemist to be honoured


Former Vice Chancellor of the University of Sri Lanka and one time Professor of Chemistry at the University of Colombo, Chartered Chemist Professor P.P.G.L. Siriwardene, will be honoured by naming the principal Lecture Hall in the newly opened Headquarters of the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon and the College of Chemical Sciences at Rajagiriya as the P.P.G.I. Siriwardene Auditorium on Monday, March 14 that 4.15 p.m.

Delivering the Lionel Siriwardene Oration on this memorable occasion would be another well respected Senior Chemist and founder Chairman of the National Science and Technology Commission of Sri Lanka, Dr. R.O.B. Wijesekera, who as Chief Guest would also unveil the Portrait of Professor Siriwardene ably drawn as a labour of love and appreciation by his former student and distinguished Chemist and Industrialist Mr. Mevan Pieris Director/General Manager, Associated Universal (Pvt) Ltd.

Professor J.N. Oleap Fernando, Honorary Dean of the College of Chemical Sciences, states in a news release that the professional body of Sri Lankan Chemists would thereby be recognizing the immense contribution made by Professor Siriwardene to the field of Chemistry both in the sphere of Tertiary Education and Industry.

He is a highly respected Past President and Honorary Fellow of the Institute of Chemistry who over many years has made a lasting contribution to development both locally and globally through the numerous positions he has served in.

Scientists, Professionals, Academics, Industrialists as well as friends, relatives, colleagues and former students of Professor Siriwardene are cordially invited for this memorable function which will take place at the (new) Institute Headquarters which was declared open at 341/22, Kotte Road, Welikada, Rajagiriya on February 25 and has brought together all the activities of the Institute under one roof.

The well recognized Graduateship and Diploma in Technology Programmes in Chemistry of its College of Chemical Sciences will be conducted at this venue.
