Leopards in Knuckles Range scare away poachers
BY S. M. Jiffrey Abdeen - Kandy South group correspondent
A few leopards prowling around the foothills of the famed Knuckles Range
in the Uda-Dambara area are scaring away poachers and illicit loggers,
say the residents of the area.
This is a blessing in disguise for Forest
Conservationists as it discourage these illegal persons from entering
the jungles.
Leopards were not heard of in the foothills of Knuckles
and may be they lived in close proximity with no conflict with man.
But clearing of areas in Burnside, Dotulkande and
Ritigama the residents state may have compelled the leopards to come in
conflict with man in looking for their food.
So far no person has been attacked by these leopards but
there is evidence to state that they have been lifting dogs from the
area.
The evidence of the existence of leopards was proved
recently when a trap laid for a deer or wild buffaloes resulted in a
leopard being trapped in it and the tightening of the noose resulted in
its death.
This matter was reported to the Police and the Forest
Department officials and the culprit had to pay the price for killing a
protected animal in a protected area. The fine was Rs. 25,000. This
killing had taken place at a place called Dotulkande mountain.
This also has proved to be a deterrent for the poachers
to hunt for animals as they know the price they will have to pay is
going to be heavy if detected.
The presence of leopards is certainly a discouragement
for these unarmed persons who have no place to hide in the thick jungles
when the spotted animal challenges in their environs. |
