"AROGYA 2005",the first national healthcare exhibition under the theme
"Caring for the Health of the Nation" will be held at the BMICH on May
13, 14 and 15.
The exhibition aims to create awareness among the
general public and all stakeholders about healthcare and it would be a
meeting point for professionals, businesses and the general public.
The event is organised by the NCCSL Conventions, the
professional convention and exhibition arm of the National Chamber of
Commerce of Sri Lanka and the Private Health Sector Development Unit of
the Ministry of Healthcare and Nutrition.
Focus of the exhibition will be on ten sectors namely
pharmaceutical, food and nutrition, leisure, sports, physiotherapy and
beautycare, hospitals and clinics, health and manpower, health and
transport, health and insurance, health and IT, indigenous medicine,
medical equipment, appliances and consumables and laboratory services.
The principal sponsor is Glaxo Smithkline(GSK) while
co-sponsor is Nawaloka Hospitals Ltd. The exhibition was launched by
Healthcare and Nutrition Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva at a ceremony
held at the Hotel Taj, Colombo on Wednesday.
Director of Private Health Sector Development Dr. Amal
Harsha de Silva told the launching ceremony that the whole concept of
the exhibition will focus on delivering a better healthcare to the
public through the public and private healthcare services 'he said.
"Private sector contribution has been significant in
this field." "The exhibition also seeks to fill the information gap in
the health sector "he added.
While commending the role played by the private sector
in the country's health sector, Minister de Silva said it also should
focus on modernising the healthcare system while creating necessary
human resources.
Minister de Silva said the country's public health
sector is facing many challenges. "We are very proud of our public
health sector. But the question is whether how long we could sustain
this. How are we going to fulfil the aspirations of the people."
"We have to realise what are the modalities and changes
required to improve the health sector. At the same time, the private
health sector too should be strengthened in order to create a healthy
competition. In view of this, our Government has given many incentives
to the private sector, "he added.
He said there is a responsibility on the private sector
not to exploit the people. "As well the government has a responsibility
of providing due incentives to the private sector. There is a
responsibility on the private sector too not to exploit the people. They
also must maintain standards."
Dr. Amal Harsha de Silva said sometimes patients are
taken for a ride while even the stakeholders are taken for a ride due to
the lack of information. "Meeting this information gap is very important
and this exhibition focuses on that."
