Special program to collect data on NGOs
BY NADIRA Gunatilleke
It is revealed that some Non-Governmental organisations (NGOs) operate
in Sri Lanka with the intention of achieving certain religious goals.
The Government cannot let this happen and the Women's
Empowerment and the Social Welfare Ministry will shortly launch a
special program to collect data on all NGOs operating in the country and
monitor them, stated Women's Empowerment and Social Welfare Minister
Sumedha G. Jayasena.
Minister Jayasena said so after inspecting the 'Little
Smiles' children's village at Koslanda recently. She said that a
majority of the NGOs such as `Little Smiles' do not operate with any
political or religious objectives, but a handful of them have hidden
objectives such as promoting religions.
The children's village `Little Smiles' which founded and
run by Michael Kreitmeir with his personal funds houses 65 orphaned
children.
The institution provides vocational training for them
while schooling them state schools such as the Koslanda Sinhala and
Tamil Schools.
The children have been provided facilities to learn the
English language, carpentry, sewing, home gardening and learning about
herbal cultivation. The children also have got the freedom to worship
any religion.
Mr. Kreitmeir made a request from the minister to set up
a Ayurvedic village in the Monaragala district. Minister Jayasena
donated several food items to the institution. The children presented
several cultural items to welcome the minister. |
