Privatisation and liberalisation no longer part of
deal:
Major shift in UK aid policy
(UNISON News) Secretary of state for international development Hilary
Benn announced a major shift in UK aid policy last week at the
high-level forum on Aid Effectiveness in Paris.
The UK government has confirmed it will no longer demand
policies such as privatisation or trade liberalisation as conditions of
UK aid to developing countries.
The policies have been widely condemned for increasing
poverty among vulnerable groups in the developing world, and the
credibility of the UK aid program has suffered as a result.
The UK has also been criticised in the past for its use
of private sector consultants to direct developing countries towards
policies such as the privatisation of public services. |
