SLMM members allegedly assaulted by LTTE by Bandula Seneviratne and P. Piyadasa An incident of assault on two members of the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission by a group of LTTE cadres at the LTTE office is reported from Vavuniya. The two members of the Monitoring Mission had visited the LTTE Vavuniya office on Tuesday to inquire into a complaint that a group of persons detained in that office were being tortured. The two Monitoring Mission Members were not permitted access, it was alleged. P. Gnanavel, the Chief of the LTTE Political Office was alleged to have said that the Monitoring Mission has no powers to examine their office. Meanwhile, Thangarasa Rasalingam, a PLOTE member had complained to the SLMM and Vavuniya Police that he was detained in the LTTE Vavuniya Political Office and was released after two days of torture and that a further group was being detained there. The Monitoring Mission has complained to the Vavuniya Police condemning the obstruction of their duties by the LTTE. They said this was a great injustice to the people abducted and tortured by the LTTE cadres. |
