USD 198m needed for water supply projects in tsunami hit areas by Ramani Kangaraarachchi The National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB)'s final report of need assessment submitted on water supply and sanitation projects in coastal areas affected by tsunami has estimated that USD 197.5 million is required to complete water supply in ten districts in the country. The districts include Kalutara, Galle, Matara, Hambantota, Ampara, Batticaloa, Trincomalee, Killinochchi, Mullativu and Jaffna. This amount covers USD 3.5 million for immediate needs fulfilment, USD 57.5 million for service restoration and USD 137 million for service expansion according to Additional General Manager Lal Premanath. General Manager NWSDB Engineer M. Wickramage said that a number of donor agents such as KFW, DANIDA, ADB JAIC, WHO have indicated their areas of interests in giving assistance. The overall need assessment was carried out by JBIC and district level assessments were done by DANIDA. 'Finalisation and standardisation of draft need assessment will be completed by mid March 2005, Wickramage said. |
