Sheraton Colombo to begin work soon

Construction work on Colombo Sheraton, a joint venture between Starwood Group USA and Universal Enterprises Pvt. Limited, Maldives will commence next January. The project is to be completed in 18 months.

According to Chairman Universal Enterprise, Mohamed Maniku, a team from the Sheraton chain visited Sri Lanka after the tsunami to assess the situation in Sri Lanka.

"They are quite confident to go ahead with the investment. The government on its part has taken all necessary steps to put back Sri Lanka in the world map once again and we are happy about that," he said.

Maniku educated in Sri Lanka is considered the father of the Maldivian Tourism. He said that Sri Lanka tourism is on an upward trend. "I have always observed that when ever there is a tragedy like this in Sri Lanka, a tourism boom followed it," he said.

Everybody knows that the tsunami is not a regular occurrence like rain but something which comes in centuries.

He said that the Sheraton Colombo would be constructed at D. R. Wijewardene Mawatha and it would be a 40 million-dollar investment. The hotel would be classified as a five star hotel with 225 rooms and it would offer the best business facilities in South Asia.

Maniku who was in Colombo yesterday also met Minister of Urban Development and officials of the Sri Lanka Tourist Board and some contractors.

Universal also has shares in Mahaweli Reach Hotel Kandy and have many other investments such as Valiant Towers, and the British School in Colombo. The group has been in the Maldivian tourism industry for 25 years. From a modest beginning in 1972, the group has a choice of 10 island resorts.

The properties on Universal are Kurumba Village (180 Rooms), Full Moon Beach (156 Rooms), Laguna Beach Resort (132 Rooms), Nakatchafushi Tourist Resort (51 Rooms), Baros Holiday Resort (77 Rooms), Kuramathi Village (144 Rooms), Kuramathi Blue Lagoon (50 Rooms), Kuramathi Cottage Club (80 Rooms), Atoll Explorer (Cruise Boat) (55 Cabins).

Sheraton based in USA has more than 400 hotels and resorts in over 70 countries and is classified as the most sought-after cities and resort destinations around the world.
