Thirukkovil shooting

LTTE hands over suspect to STF

by Ranil Wijayapala

The LTTE yesterday handed over a man, an ex-LTTE cadre, a suspect of the shooting incident in Thirukkovil in which Batticaloa and Ampara district LTTE Women Political Wing leader was injured, to the Police Special Task Force in Kalmunai, Eastern Province DIG Neville Wijesinghe told the Daily News yesterday.

A police team from Thirukkovil has already been dispatched to Kalmunai to question the person in custody, who had sought refuge at a welfare camp in Kalmunai to escape the LTTE cadres chasing after him, DIG Wijesinghe added.

"The person in custody was claiming that he came to the nearby bank and sought refuge at the relief camp to escape from the LTTE," he added.

The three injured LTTE women cadres were flown to Colombo national hospital last evening for further treatment as their condition was serious, DIG Wijesing said late in the evening yesterday.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) Spokeswoman Helen Ollafsdottir told the Daily News yesterday that a dialogue between both parties on the series of killings and shootings in the East is needed to find an immediate solution.

"We have to find a solution to the incidents taking place in the East in Batticaloa and Ampara since these incidents seriously undermine the ceasefire agreement," Olaffsdottir added.

Commenting on the shooting incident in Thirukkovil in Ampara where three women cadres attached to the LTTE Political Wing were shot at on Monday night, Olaffsdottir said the SLMM was facing difficulties giving a formal ruling when perpetrators have not been identified.

"The SLMM is trying to get both parties to discuss the situation in the East to find a solution," she added.

She said the LTTE made a formal complaint on the incident where two LTTE women cadres were injured in government controlled areas in Thirukkovil.

"We are inquiring into this incident," she added.

Police are also investigating the killing of Dayanidhi Subramanium an ex-military personnel at Station Road, Batticaloa, around 9.05 on Monday night by suspected LTTE pistol gang.

According to sources, Subramanium had a problem with the TRO personnel handling relief at the relief camp at Batticaloa a few days back.
