by Florence Wickramage

The Department of Wildlife Conservation (DWLC) has set up three more Flying Squads in the Southern, North-Western and the Mahaweli regions to strengthen conservation activities in protected areas coming under the department's purview.

The three new Flying Squads have been set up on the instructions of Environment and Natural Resources Minister A. H. M. Fowzie, DWLC's Director General Dayananda Kariyawasam told the Daily News yesterday.

The DWLC is receiving daily complaints about activities committed in contravention of the provisions of the Flora and Fauna Protection Ordinance and the Flying Squad of the Headquarters branch are successfully carrying out raids.

Among such activities are the illegal felling of timber, game-hunting, possession, exhibition and sale of game meat, gem-mining etc.

Kariyawasam said the new Flying Squads functioning under DWLC Assistant Directors of the various regions have been instructed to strictly enforce the law. Major National Parks found in the North-Western region are Wilpattu; Uda Walawe and Yala in the South and Wasgamuwa and Maduru Oya in the Mahaweli region.

Complaints and information about illegal activities could be made directly in person, without disclosing once identity or by telephone to the different Flying Squads. All complaints and information would be treated confidentially, Kariyawasam said.

Assistant Directors in charge of the Flying Squads could be reached on telephone: Asst. Director - Southern Region 047-2237332; North Western Region 025-2235058 and Mahaweli 027-2222262.
