by Manjula Fernando The Examinations Department heads will review the proposals of the special committee which evaluated the existing GCE Advanced Level paper structure, at a "setters" meeting on Friday, Departmental sources said yesterday. University professors setting the papers for the forthcoming A/L examination are expected to take stock of the recommendations before a final decision on the structure of this year's paper, sources said. Education Secretary Dr. Tara de Mel appointed a special committee under the direction of President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga recently to look into ways of improving the quality of the A/L and Ordinary Level examinations in keeping with education reforms. The committee is of the view that the existing paper was too knowledged based and oversees basic competencies of students. Therefore it needs updating, they have highlighted. It has been pointed out that the key concepts used for evaluating the students' competencies were not up to international standards. The recommendations call for incorporating sections to evaluate critical and divergent thinking, creativity initiatives, leadership skills, problem solving and responsibilities and team work, in addition to their knowledge on the subject matter. Dr. de Mel has directed the Examinations Department to take into consideration these recommendations and incorporate them in the forthcoming exam as appropriate, the Education Ministry spokesperson said. She has also advised the Department to study the exam paper structures in India, UK, Canada, Sweden and Australia which are known for high standards of education and testing methods. |
