Ruhuna Campus out of bounds following clash

by Siri Wawwage and I.D.T. Somasiri in Matara

Ruhuna University Vice Chancellor Prof. Ranjith Senaratne ordered all university students to leave the campus before 12 noon yesterday and declared the campus out of bounds for them following a clash between two student groups which injured two students and damaged some university property.

Police have been deployed outside the university premises to maintain law and order following a complaint to Matara Police by the two injured students.

The clash erupted during a membership drive launched among new entrants to the university by the three student unions in preparation to the forthcoming student council elections.

Students involved in the clash wielding clubs and other missiles are reported to have damaged window panes in the Science and Biology Faculties.
